  1. 1. I thought this article was interesting to read. I had no idea that multi-tasking could hinder the way teenagers learn in the future or cause them to lose focus easily. It was interesting to see that in 1999 only 16% of teens said they were “media multitaskers,” then by 2005 the number rose to 26%. Recent studies found that now-a-days 65% of teenagers multi-task. I also wasn't aware of how the brain can't really focus on learning and retaining information when it is multi-tasking.

    2. I “multi-task” with a lot of things but for school work I try to avoid it as much as possible. I've never been able to focus or retain information in loud rooms, with the TV on, or with music playing. If I have to read something I usually need dead quiet so I tend to shut all distractions off. However, I find myself answering text messages, phone calls, and Facebook chats occasionally during my school work.

    3. One downfall to multitasking would be that you are not able to retain information as well as if you were focusing on just that.

  2. 1. In response to the article, I think many concerns are valid. However, i do believe as the digital age continues moving into the workplace, and once integration is full, multitasking will be essential and required, and applicants who cannot effectively will not succeed.

Also, I believe, that yes, will quality of learning or execution may be down, that fits with the goal. Multitasking is inherently trying to accomplish more things at once, and cover more ground overall, so an obvious decrease in quality is and should be expected. No teenager thinks they do better work while multitasking, but they do know they can get more things accomplished at once still.

    2. Doing homework I do multi-task. However, if I do need to get something more difficult then average homework, I will try to avoid social media while doing it, instead giving myself five minute “reward” breaks.

3.One neuroscientist believes that if multitasking continues at the rate and prevalence in youth, soon people will be satisfied completely with very elementary surface level investigation and knowledge of information.

    1. 1. I think this article was very interesting. I think the problem of teen media multitasking is just a result of how much pressure kids have on them to succeed mixed with the accessibility and relevance of media. It only makes sense that if a student's homework is on the internet, they are bound to get more easily distracted with the limitless options at their fingertips. However, it is odd to think that this habit of multitasking that has become increasingly prevalent is not necessarily more efficient or effective.

      2. I don't generally multitask while I do homework. I try not to multitask because when I don't, I get assignments done better and quicker than I would if I were distracted. It also makes me feel more productive while I work and more relaxed when I finish because I know I got all my work done.

      3. One downfall of media multitasking that this article references is that it makes kids more satisfied by shallow, surface-level information so intellectual depth and curiosity can be forgotten.

  3. 1. I think the article was really interesting, I didn't know that it was a "bad" thing to multitask but I understand that you would learn more about the topic if you concentrated only on that. I thought it was interesting to read about the opinions of people who thought multi tasking is a good thing.

    2. I multi task when I do my homework but it's not because it accomplishes more, I know that I get more done if I concentrate on just one thing, it is because I just can't keep away from doing othere things. If I ever really need to focus on my homework I go to the library where I can't get distracted by things at my house like my laptop and phone.

    3. It's almost impossible to gain a depth of knowledge of any of the tasks you do while you're multitasking.

  4. 1. I thought the article was very interesting and showed different views on the topic. It was interesting to see how the amount of "multi-taskers" has increased throughout the years. Because we have so many things to do with such little time, multitasking is essential in many peoples lives.

    2. While I'm doing homework I multitask depending on how easy the homework is. If it's just a worksheet with vocab words I can look up, I will watch tv or listen to music while I do it. However, if it is a more difficult assignment, I will focus more of my time on it and put other things aside.

    3. A downfall with multitasking is that people don't actually learn while they're doing it. People may not get the full advantages of focusing on one thing at a time if they are doing multiple things at a time.

  5. 1. It was interesting but I do not have any thoughts beyond that.

    2. Yes I multitask, while doing almost everything.

    3. They say that people who multitask while learning do not actually learn as well as when they are simply just concentrating on what they are trying to learn.

  6. 1) The article was good and interesting. I do multitask but only when I feel good about doing it and only when Im comfortable with the topic.

    2) When I do homework I multitask, I will watch tv or listen to music while I do it. But I usually focus on my work.

    3) A bad thing about multitasking is that people don't learn while they do it. you don't get the focusing on one thing at a time if they are doing multiple things at a time.

  7. 1. This article was neat because it showed the amount of multi taskers and how it increased over the years. Mostly because everyone needs to multitask at one point sometimes your just really busy.

    2. Well I dont get to much homework but when I do I usually multitask here and there like to switch music but I usually just try and get it all done quickly as I can.

    3. Theres different downfalls for different kinds of people. Such as your not really learning much if you multi task and your not really get the full potential of the assignment as you should.

  8. Multitasking has been integrated into my generation to a point where when kids go to do work, multitasking is almost assured at this point. With a plethora of distractions presented for teens and young adults while going to study or do homework, multitasking starts almost unconsciously with a quick text or a facebook chat. Multitasking in in of itself is a positive phenomena, when done correctly. Doing more than one assignment at a time and alternating between subjects helps with not getting to bored with the work and get stuck on certain problems. While multitasking with TV shows and social media cause further distraction, multitasking with work that needs to get done is better. I myself multitask between two different subjects when doing homework, and although the work isn't done faster, the quality is overall better.

  9. 1. The article about Multi Tasking was very informative and interesting. To see that more girls multi task than boys and 'multi tasking' has gone up since 1999 doesn't surprise me. Everyone multi tasks and its not going to change.
    2. I constantly multi task. Wether I'm doing homework or anything, I end up multi tasking. Its an easy way to get things done and at a fast pace.
    3. Multi tasking can be bad because it makes you not focus all your attention on one thing but its split.

  10. 1. I found the article very interesting due to the different views on multitasking and the ideas that were presented. It was interesting that some people believed that it would hurt student's ability to work well in the future and others thought that it would help because working with technology may be very important in the future. I agree that when multitasking student's are not getting as deep an understanding of what they are learning but they do learn it easier and more efficiently.

2.Most of the time I do multitask while doing homework. If it is a very important assignment such as a research paper or a big grade I won't multitask but I focus on the work. If it is just any normal homework assignment I usually do multitask. I find that listening to music greatly helps me focus on my homework and checking facebook or twitter every once in a while doesn't harm my learning.

3.A downfall with multitasking is that while people do it at a young age they are not getting the same educational benefits that they would if they were just focusing on their homework. This is because they do not get the same understanding because they are only learning what they have to while they are focusing on other things at the same time. If they focus on the homework only they get a very deep understanding and learn even more than they have to.

  11. 1. This was a very interesting article to read. However, it seemed that many of the statements made by researchers (such as David Meyer from UMich) were speculative. The article even stated, "Researchers say there isn't any answer yet to whether multitasking helps, hurts or has no effect on teens' development.
'Given that kids have grown up always doing this, it may turn out that they are more skilled at it. We just don't know yet,' said Russell Poldrack."
But what I think is most interesting about the article is what this rise in students multitasking says about society, and particularly our education system. The research shows that students who multitask do not focus on the task at hand as much if they're doing two things at once, and are subsequently not learning as thoroughly as they could be. Yet one of the students interviewed still holds a 3.8 GPA. I find this worrying, because it could point to a trend where high school grades are based off of fairly inaccurate gauges of learning (such as worksheets, that can easily be done while multitasking), and that schools now place less importance on actually LEARNING the material.
    2. The description of how some of these students do their homework almost exactly fits my own. I always listen to music while doing my homework (and since I usually listen from YouTube since there's more variety than my iPod, there's the potential to be distracted by funny cat videos), and if it's a relatively unimportant assignment, I'm also checking facebook, blogs I read, etc. But if I'm writing a research paper or doing a more important/difficult assignment, I try and only listen to music, and not get distracted by anything else on the internet.
    3. One of the downfalls mentioned in the article is that multitasking employs a different part of the brain (the striatum, used for repetitive tasks) instead of engaging the hippocampus, which is responsible for storing and retrieving information. So if you multitask, your brain isn't storing the information, so you're not really learning anything.

  12. 1. I thought the article was creative and insightful. It shows the pros and cons of multitasking. I thought it was interesting to compare the views about multitasking from teens and adults.
    2. I multitask all the time. Currently, I am doing this assignment on the bus for the Music Trip while watching a movie and texting. I know that it is not an efficient method to doing homework, but I do not get bored or stressed if I multitask.
3.One downfall to multitasking is that students are unable to devote their complete attention to something when they are multitasking. This causes students to become shallow learners, satisfied with not learning with more depth.

  13. 1. I think that this article is very accurate! Pretty much all high schoolers I know do something else while doing their homework or anything else. Like the article mentioned, it is good to develop multitasking skills. However, you shouldn't always use these skills. The article took on many different perspectives on multitasking and found very different people to interview.

    2. I definitely multitask while doing homework. Usually I have my phone next to me or go on facebook or twitter while doing my homework or doing other activities. However these distractions can also help me. I often texted or use facebook to get some AP Bio help. In today's society, it is very hard for teenagers to not multitask.

    3. The downfall of multitasking is that you can't fully concentrate on an activity. You are only giving half of your attention to each of the activities. By multitasking, your can't understand at a higher level and you are only learning at a basic level.

  14. I think it was a very interesting article. I know I multitask a lot while doing homework such as watching the Red Sox game or more recently the news. I agree with the article that these skills should only be used in certain occasions. If I am studying for a test I only study for the test and do nothing else. The article interviewed different people and took different approaches.
In also want to point out that not many people can multitask. I can very well but most of the time when I do my hw my focus is on that more than anything else and is 100 percent on it when I am studying for a test. I think people should know how to multitask because it is very important.

  15. 1. I think a lot of the worries raised in the article about multi-tasking and its bad effects are valid. I can observe that even in myself, I often have a lower sense of wanted to delve deeper and deeper into a topic, but rather am satisfied with a shallow answer when learning something new. This effect was described as one thing that could occur after one multi-tasks too much. Multi-tasking can be useful at times, but I know for a fact that people cannot be as successful when doing more than one thing at once. For example, I can't have a really long intense conversation on the phone while doing something else, because I know I won't really be listening to the other person, and therefore won't be able to respond as well. When things aren't so important, multi-tasking can't be that big of a deal, and can be helpful when you have too many things to do in a short period of time. However, I agree that multi-tasking shouldn't occur while one is trying to study or do something of importance.

    2. I definitely multi-task all the time, while driving, while eating, even when falling asleep I listen to music at the same time. However, I know that it's important sometimes to stay focused on just one thing, and not get too distracted with social media or anything else. Sometimes it feels like you are getting a lot done if you are working on multiple projects at once, but it is also clear that if you just focus on one thing, you can finish that project and feel successful.

  16. 1. This article makes many points about how multitasking may be detrimental to the teenage population. The points mentioned are, in my opinion, all valid. The author makes a good point about how people who multi task often retain less detail, as shown in the study of the cards and tones. Overall, I believe that multitasking can be useful but I agree with the article that it should not be used 24/7.

    2. I multitask everyday. I don't like to listen to music or watch tv while I do homework, but I often use my laptop, phone, and/or tv simultaneously. I know it's important to focus on one thing at a time, but I feel like technology is so readily available that it's almost impossible not to multitask.

    3. The downfall that this article references that hits closest to home for me is the fact that students do not retain as much knowledge if they multitask. I definitely agree that this is a major drawback for teenagers who multitask, just like me.

  17. 1. I liked this article because I supported both sides of the argument for multitasking. It said that multitasking can be detrimental when it comes to retaining information, but also may become a necessary skill as time goes on.

    2. I multitask most of the time. Especially when I'm doing an assignment like vocab where I'm just copying information. However, if I read I have to focus all my attention on what I'm reading and I can't listen to music or have anyone talk to me.

    3. According to the article it has not been proven that multitasking is more efficient or as effective as doing one task at a time. In fact, information may not be fully absorbed and will be less likely committed to a persons long term memory.

  18. 1. The article was interesting and intriguing and I am glad I read it.

    2. Yes I multi task but try to avoid it during some aspects of my life. One part of my life when I like to give my full attention to, is music because I like to leave the rest of the world behind me when I am writing musing because I want my music to be as good as possible.

3.The downfall of multi tasking is that you are not getting the full extent of the information from either of the surfaces you are giving attention to
